ICFO is offering a staff research engineer position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment.
The successful candidate will be joining the Super-resolution Light Microscopy & Nanoscopy (SLN) Research Facility at ICFO led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez which is equipped with front-end microscopy techniques that are able to operate a step beyond the commercial state of the art.
The main responsibilities for this position include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Participate in access management activities (internal or external) of the SLN.
- Participate in collaborative activities (internal or external) of the SLN.
- Participate in research activities of the SLN.
- Contact with strategic suppliers and manufacturers of consumables, expendables, and equipment for the SLN.
- Retention of critical know-how (according to experience).
- Drafting the usage regulations, protocols, and procedures for the laboratory, as well as their implementation, monitoring, and updating.
- Seek advice from and follow the instructions of the department responsible for Safety and Risk Prevention.
- Manage the training of SLN LAB users: design the necessary training for users, ensure the correct implementation of the training process, and deliver the training in stipulated cases.
- Coordination of tasks, activities, material resources, and available personnel to ensure access for internal and external users.

Candidates must hold, at the time of contract initiation, an internationally-recognized Ph.D.-equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the nearest future) preferably in biology, bioengineering, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or related in the Life&Health Sciences field. Accreditation as researcher in animal experimentation.
The candidate should have:
- Experience in super-resolution microscopy (STED, STORM, SIM).
- Experience in the preparation and usage of fluorescent probes for different applications
- Hands-on-experience in the use of advanced imaging techniques for biological applications, including live cell imaging and whole-embryo imaging
- Hands-on experience in the use of advanced imaging techniques for biological applications
- Experience in working and training microscopy users with cutting edge light microscopes set-up and operation.
- Experience in image analysis
- Approved accreditation to work with animals for experimental and scientific purposes and to design procedures and projects
- Author in high-impact journals (Q1)
- Worked in international collaborations with other groups.
- Fluent in English, as well as in Catalan and/or Spanish.

Salaries for ICFO Staff Research Engineer positions are assigned by the Selection Committee, based on experience and seniority of the applicant, as well as the assigned tasks and responsibilities within the group. Standard salaries range from a lower level aligned with national Ramon-y-Cajal fellowships to higher levels aligned with Marie Skłodowska-Curie individual fellowships.
The contract offered is a permanent contract.
Additionally, a family allowance is also available on request and after corresponding approval for people with family charges in the terms described in the corresponding policy.
